Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States. She is the first vice president to be female and the most powerful female official in U.S. history, as also the first African American and first Asian American vice president. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general of California in 2011-2017 and a United States senator representing California in 2017-2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Her career began in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. She was elected Attorney-General of California in 2010 and reelected in 2014. Harris was the junior member of the United States Senate from California from 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election and became the second African American woman to serve in Congress , and the only South Asian American American to serve in the United States Senate. As senator, she fought for reforms to healthcare as well as federal de-scheduling cannabis, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. She was well-known for the direct questioning she conducted of Trump government officials during Senate hearings.
